C:\found.001...

For some reason suddenly in my C:\ drive all of these hidden folders
appeared C:\FOUND.001...FOUND.040. I've seen these files before in
system analysers, but there supposed to be hidden normally. I can't
figure out how to make them hidden again. Could some please tell me
how?

Hi

Those folders are created by chkdsk and can be deleted as for the most they
contain 'data' that can't easily be retrieved.

These folders are the result of running checkdisk utility (Chkdsk), if
it founds lost clusters and/or lost files. Neither of Windows processes
use them.

In some cases these folders can be useful: if it is need to restore the
files that were lost. But if you had no problems for a month or more
after such folder(s) had been created, or reinstalled the program which
refused to run after Chkdsk -- you can delete these folders.

Why you do see them now -- there can be several reasons, and the most
possible is that you or someone else changed the Folders View and
allowed Windows to show hidden/system files. In this case these folders
are looking more dimly than the non-hidden folders.

Mikhail,
You sound pretty knowledgable on this Found.001 issue and I have a question
for you. I have a system that also has many of these folders. I was told that
this is a sign of the hard drive itself failing and that I should replace
it;however, in these readings and my other research it sounds as if it is
just a regular Windows safety function.
My computer will every now and then freaze up and the only way I can get it
to respond (sometimes even waiting for more than a half hour) is to shut it
down and restart it. This is when it creates another Found folder.
Could there be something else going on here?

It is not good that your Windows hangs often, and it says about the
hardware problem -- but that does not mean (though does not exclude
either) a problem is in the drive. It can be a problem with memory, and
even with video card. That may be also that your computer is overheated
(say, too many dust in the coolers and heatsinks).

Usually the files in these folders are the lost temporary files, which
were created but could not be released because of Windows hang-up -- and
the folders can be deleted with no harm.

But if there was a bad drive crash -- they can contain the files like
documents etc. -- and in this case the content of these folders is
extremely useful: otherwise all these files would be lost forever.

BTW, I would suppose your file system is FAT: it is less tolerant to
computer crashes than NTFS is.
