C: drive partitioning

O

ozgurkalay

Hi all,

I have a laptop computer with 80 GB HD but with a single partition on
it. I need to add another partition without formatting and reinstalling
the OS again.

As I know , WinXP cannot create any logical partitions on a system
drive. What is the easiest way to create any other partition on my C
drive. Should I have to use any partitioning tools?

If I create any other partition with a partitioning tool , do I have
the risk to sacrifice same data or some empty space? What about system
files in C drive...do they get damaged?

Need help...

thnx a lot..

It cannot? Well, I never used the MS tools to partition and
fromat, so I would not know.

Actually you need to shrink the existing partition. Otherwise you cannot
create a new one. Depending on what filesystem is on the c: drive, you
can use different tools.

If it is FAT, then the free GNU parted can shrink the partition
for you. If it is NTFS, you can use the commercial partition magic,
but in that case you need to make a backup before, because PM is
very, very unreliable. If you use GNU parted, you should also have
a backup, even though I have never heard of it trashing partitions.

After shrinking c: you can add an extended partition and then create
logical partitions within that.

Why ? It isnt always actually necessary.

Yes it can. And you may not actually need a logical partition
anyway, two primary partitions may be all you need.

Use Acronis Disk Director Suite.
Should I have to use any partitioning tools?

It is actually possible to do it with the standard XP diskpart, its in the help.

Not if you do it properly. Safest to do a full image of the physical drive first tho.
