bypass win2k logon

I have a laptop running W2k pro. An ex-employee will not give me his the
password and the admin password isn't working. I have read on here about
utilities that will reset the registry files or something, but the problem is
that the ex-employee has/will not return the base of the laptop which
contains the cd and floppy drives.

Is there any way to bypass the logon screen? If not, is it possible to boot
from either an external cd drive connected to the usb or from a usb memory
stick?

Thx

You can look for password crackers via Google. They try to guess
the administrator's password. The process can take several days
and is not necessarily successful.

Here is another way:
- Remove the laptop's hard disk.
- Buy an adapter that lets you connect this 2.5" disk to a
standard PC ribbon cable. It costs about $5.00.
- Temporarily install the disk as a slave disk in a desktop PC.
- Boot that machine with a boot disk from here:
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html
- When prompted, take care to specify the correct drive
where the laptop's Win2000 installation resides.
- Set the administrator's password to a blank.

You must be very careful when you fit the disk adapter.
If you fit it back to front then you will physically destroy
the laptop's hard disk.

Is it Misty or Wayne ?

Since you have now changed from "I purchased a used laptop (windows 2000 pro)" in;
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general to "An ex-employee" I am not really sure that you
legitimately even own this notebook. Somehow I get the feeling it is a stolen notebook and
you are trying to hack it. In any case you are being disingenuous in your posting and
that's not cool !

Thanks for pointing this out - I failed to spot it.

Actually, I am Wayne. Misty would be my assistant, who I sold the laptop to
since I no longer need it. She told me she posted the question in the wrong
place so I told her I would re-post it. Sorry for any problems this may have
caused you guys, but don't be so eager to jump to conclusions next time.

Anyway, thanks for the advice Pegasus.

Still, the information doesn't jibe !

If it was an ex-employee of CTX Mortgage Company in Dallas, TX. and he/she did not provide
either the notebook base unit or the password you would have sought legal remedies. Both
for the password and the hardware as the employee would have been guilty of theft and
destroying company property.

My advice remains the same. WIPE the notebook and install an OS from scratch !
