Busness Contact Manager Update

I have dowloaded the above mentioned update and I have run the same. When I
open Outlook 2003 the programs tries to set up the BCM and asks for 2 options
- to create a new database or Connect to an existing database.
It is unable to do both and I end up cancelling the wizard. The problem is I
have over 3000 contacts from my earlier version and am unable to access them
and also when i try installing the old version from the original CD, it doe
not happen.

Please help as I am desperate!!

I sympathize with you 100% Shelley and hope that you get your answer soon,
because I need the same answers you do! I am having the same exact problem
and while Microsoft's support people have been very helpful however the
problem is not resolved yet and I am waiting for another dept. at MS to
contact me. I have uninstalled & reinstalled, using Ctrl Panel. I have used
my original disks and the BCMV2UPD from MS's download site.
One thing that catches my very NON-technical eye is this: I'm using MS Small
Biz Ed 2003. When I click "about" in Outlook it says "Standard Edition" and
when I click "about" in Word, it says "Small Business Edition". I haven't got
a clue if that makes any difference at all but at this point, I too am
desparate and am looking for any solution to this problem I've been having
for about a week now.

I can try to open your older .BCMs or MDF/LDF combinations and migrate them
to current version if you want to try that.

That applies to both of you. I have installs of Office 2003 SBE, Pro, BCMV2,
and 2007 in virtual systems.

Thanks Leonid!
In the time since my post, I've deleted BCM through Ctrl Panel, reinstalled
it from my SB Edition disk and downloaded the BCMV2UPD from the Microsoft
website. And I downloaded the .Net 2.0 because the "check for updates" button
told me to after a crash/error message I got when I tried to run the newly
installed/updated BCM.
Nothing good happened!
I read a thread that mentioned start>run>services.msc and to look for a
service name (can't remember it!) relating to BCM and making sure it was
started.
I tried that too.
I have MSSQL$MICROSOFTSMLBIZ but even after all the uninstalls and
reinstalls, I have nothing in services that says anything about BCM.
I am BCMless and about to be hairless too!

The confusion is because Microsoft used mssql$microsoftbcm initially, but
switched to mssql$microsoftsmlbiz later because of SBA2006 integration.

That SmlBiz is the updated instance name of the same service. Now, I think
you just need to go to File -> Manage data files (on Outlook 2003 at least,
it's different on Outlook 2007), and add a BCM database.

You can call me now and save yourself some hair :)

Alright, so I took advantage of the holiday weekend and refused to pull my
hair out - I occupied my hands with (a couple of) winecoolers!

Thanks again Leonid - I'll do the PST/EST math and call you when it's less
of your morning there and more of my afternoon here! You mentioned SBA2006
and that's where my troubles all began! I had previously d/l a trial version
of SBA and when the end of the trial was expiring, I uninstalled the prog
because it wasn't something I found much use for. After that uninstall is
when all my BCM trouble began!

And I've gone through the data management process to add the BCM database
but every time I try it, I get the same error as when I'm opening Outlook for
the 1st time and the BCM screen comes up asking if I want to use my Outlook
profile:
database creation unsuccessful even when I type a different name than the
name that comes up by default and I also get an error message when I try to
connect to an existing database that defaults to my computer's name.

Thanks again!

Have exactly the same problem. Have trying to migrate my old BCM
accounts and contacts but have no idea where this database has now
gone.

Cannot get BCM started on Office 2007 Beta since it will not let me
create a new database.

I presume if thi scan be done then I will be able to import accounts
perhaps from a backup.

Any help sincerely appreciated.

many thanks

Update:
After MANY hours on the phone w/Microsoft Support (various departments) I am
finally up and running! Apparently my problem was created when the uninstall
of SBAccounting did something to the MSDE.

I wish I had a more technical brain because then I would be able to clearly
elaborate the steps that the Support People took. My issue was finally sorted
out today by people from the research/troubleshooting and the MSDE
departments. And the best news was that my contacts are all still right where
they're supposed to be!

Thanks for the helpful suggestions, thanks to all of you who take the time
to post your questions, and a BIG thanks to all of you who take the time to
answer our questions!!

Could you give us a better description of how you got your problem
resolved?

Thanks

Paulo,

I'm not that great at technical issues but I tried to take notes when I
could - I began contacting support more than a week ago regarding this issue
and have spoken to many different people in many different departments.

I received so much support due to my errors being cause by uninstalling the
trial version of SB Accounting. I'm glad I didn't try out the Office 2007
Beta version because there is no support for beta products.

Reference was made to knowledge base article #290991 (instructions on how to
manually remove the SQL Server) and the two technicians working on my problem
used that information. I am running XP Home SP2 with Office Small Business
Edition 2003; I don't know if my BCM previously had been v1 but it is now v2.
Apparently one of the things giving support a hard time is that on XP Home,
the default administrator isn't available for logging on and so while I am
the "only" user and have administrator rights, MSDE was able to install one
part of the SQL Server but not another which was contrary because installing
one was supposed to roll over to allow install of the other part.

I handed over control of my machine during several live meetings and I'm
glad I did because there were things happening on my monitor that I didn't
know existed! From deleting/renaming/changing things in regedit, typing
commands to revise the way the SQL Server functioned, changing the
administrator password without being logged on as the administrator - there
was a LOT going on... today's call was about 4 hours long.

This is the summary I have from MS support regarding the resolution of my
problem, I hope it helps you!

"Problem – The customer had Outlook Small Business Contact Manager installed
and then installed Small Business Accounting. When she uninstalled the trial
accounting software, it uninstalled MSDE and she was not able to use the
Outlook Small Business Contact Manager. After this she was not able to
reinstall MSDE.

Environment – Windows XP Home Edition

Root Cause (if known) – The accounting software uninstalled MSDE.

Resolution – First we had to uninstall MSDE manually, rebooted and
reinstalled MSDE. We had to reboot because MSDE would not install. After
successful installation, we restored her contact management database, cleaned
up the databases that were not needed and ran Outlook Contact Manager to
ensure everything worked as necessary. At this point, everything is running
as necessary."

Patsy,

I just posted a problem that sounds like yours. I accepted the recent BCM
update and my existing (before the update) Business Contacts are not to be
found! I can't seem to import from a backup CD (although the Personal Conacts
do Import). The only other change is the appearance of the SQL server icon in
the bottom right of the screen.

I have a standalone computer for my home based business, Windows XP Home,
Office Small Bus Edition 2003 with BCM 2003. I believe this is what you have.

I am just starting to sort this mess out.

Would you agree that your solution might apply to my situation. It seems
that a key change is to uninstall the SQL.

I would appreciate your comments.
