Burning "read only" vs "Non read only" CD's

I have a new P4 computer with Win XP home edition, lots of RAM and
hard drive space and a CD burner. I have a few basic questions about
burning CD's

1. Are CD-R's always recorded as "read only"?

2. Are CR-RW's recordable as "read only" and/or "non read only"?

3. Am I correct in assuming that in order to record/manipulate data in
conjunction with CD-R's and CD-RW's I should use a 3rd party software?

If the answer to # 3 is yes what is a good piece of software?

My basic problem is being able to move ( by burning a CD) my jpg's to
CD and then later delete and/or move the jpg's back to the hard drive.
The "read only" file will not let me delete or move them. I can only
copy them back to the hard drive.

It seemd to me that I did not have this problem on my old computer.

I know these are basic things to most people but any inputs would be
appreciated.

Hi Loring,
1. Are CD-R's always recorded as "read only"?
Yes.

2. Are CR-RW's recordable as "read only" and/or "non read only"?

Not unless they are recorded with packet writing software. Normal burning
programs treat a CDRW the same as a CDR. Packet writing is what allows you
to write, rewrite, overwrite an existing file on a CDRW.
3. Am I correct in assuming that in order to record/manipulate data in
conjunction with CD-R's and CD-RW's I should use a 3rd party software?

Yes, see www.cdrfaq.org for some reviews of the available software.

Shove 'em all in a folder then right click on the folder left click on
properties remove the read only attribute of the folder then click on apply.
