When I attempt to burn a couple of files to a CD I get a message that says
the disc in the drive is not a writable CD or it is full. Neither of the
previous statements are true. Can you please tell me what the problem might
be and how to correct it?

Thanks again for your prompt reply. I have Nero burning software, but I do
not know how to get this file from where it is located to the Nero burning
software. I am trying to burn a file that is located in my inbox in my
hotmail account. Can you tell me how to get it from there to my Nero burning
software? Your continued help will be greatly appreciated.

Try Nero.

Well, Nero is definitely more full-featured than XP's built-in burning
program, but if the OP's drive is hosed that will not help him either.
David, what changed between the time things worked and the time they
didn't? Is this an older cd-rw drive? Basically, all you've told us is
"it's not working" with no information to narrow down the
troubleshooting steps. Here are some links to help you:

I really appreciate all of the help given me on trying to resolve this issue.
I apologize for not giving you the information you need, but this is all the
information that I have. Nothing has changed since the last time I tried
this process. I copied this file to my Nero burning software to see if I
could accomplish the task there. When I went to burn the file I got a
message that told me the file could not be burned because the disc was not
empty and did I want Nero to erase the disc and of course I said no because
it contains information that I need. I am wondering if this happend because
the previous data on the disc was burned by XP program and now I am trying to
burn a file using Nero? Your continued help will be greatly appreciated.

It is possible. Turn on IMAPI burning in Services. Make sure the box to
allow recording is checked on the cd-rw drive's Properties. Check out
the links I gave you. If nothing works, try your drive in another
computer or try another cd-rw drive. Some people have suggested getting
a cd drive cleaner for problems like this; I've never used one because
I always have extra drives lying around. You can buy a new cd-rw drive
for around $25usd.

Have you checked to see if you are using a CD+R or a CD-R?
In other words check the compatability of the disc.

There are no such things as CD+R /CD-R, only CD-R and CR-RW.
But DVD-R/DVD-RW, DVD+R/DVD+RW do exist.

Good luck!!
