Burning/DVD issues

Ever since I upgraded to Vista from XP, my DVD drive hasn't worked properly.
I can no longer burn any data whatsoever. No pictures, files, etc. My drive
also does no recognize DVDs anymore. I insert a DVD movie, the drive attempts
to run it, but it never does. It does still recognize music CDs, but nothing
more. I know that it is not a hardware issue since everything worked
perfectly while on XP. When I checked the device manager, it states that
everything is working properly. It is a Slimtype DVDRW SOSW-852S ATA device,
if that helps. Any assistance would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You might try checking the mfg's website for a firmware update. That
would be the kind of problem that firmware would solve. Good luck.

The manufacturer has no update for my system. I suspect a driver update
would solve this issue. Where would I get one for my drive? My laptops
manufacturer doesn't have any updates though. Thanks for the reply.

I downloaded and tried nero 7.0, and it had the same effect. I couldn't burn
anything at all. This is really irritating. Does anyone else have this
problem? How did you solve it? Do you believe SP1 will fix this?

There really isn't much else to say... contact the mfg of the CD/DVD
drive if possible for a FIRMWARE update for the drive itself not a
device driver for Vista

David N,

The following link may provide a solution. Follow the instructions on the
following Microsoft article to remove upper and lower filters:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/929461

Sometimes this solution works, but who knows until you try it. Some burner
programs, such as Nero and/or iTunes/iPod have been known to cause the
problem you're having. Note in the Microsoft article that you may need to
reinstall a burner program, if that's what's causing the problem. It's
always a good idea to update any burner program if it's causing a problem in
Vista. Post back on the results.

I tried the steps provided in the help support page that you requested. I
made it to the location in the registry that was specified by the article,
but I did not find anything labeled "UpperFilters" or "LowerFilters". I see
(default), Class, ClassDesc, EnumPropPages32, Iconpath, Installer32,
NoInstallClass, and SilentInstall. I see nothing whatsoever labeled Upper or
Lower filters. What do you advice? That you for you assistance.

David N,

If you're sure you followed the instructions, then I'm in no position to
provide more guidance than that Microsoft article. Try using Windows
built-in burning capability, just as a test to see what happens.

Here is how you do that. Use Windows Explorer (Start > All Programs >
Accessories). In Windows Explorer, copy a file, like in Documents, by right
clicking it and selecting Copy. Now right click the burner drive and select
Paste. The file should appear in the right pane opposite the burner drive.
Right click the file and select Properties. Note where the file is located.
Windows stashes files until you're ready to burn all of them. Now, right
click the burner drive and select Burn to Disk (words to that effect). If
everything is working, the file should be burned to disk. Now right click
the file, in the right pane) and note its location. It should be on the
disk. Just something to try.

Thank you for trying to help Freddy. I have tried Nero, and I have also
tried the built in burning capabilities in Vista. The burn always never
works. I still do not understand why I can play CDs, but when I try a DVD,
it doesn't read it. Is it a possible bios issue? I have to admit that I am
at a complete loss here, but I do appreciate your assistance.

Hi David,

Have you tried uninstalling the drive in Device Manager. That is, In Device
Manager, under its Properties, select Uninstall. The idea is to have Windows
detect and reinstall it when it reboots, which sometimes sets everything
right. Just another step to try, if you haven't already.

David,

I don't know all the troubleshooting steps you have taken, but let me just
say that Nero has been known to disable optical drives in some Vista systems.
If you haven't tried this before, uninstall Nero and then try burning using
the built-in Vista burner. Just another troubleshooting step to try.

Thanks for all the help Freddy. I reinstalled the firmware for the drive,
and that seems to have fixed the burning issue. I still have minor trouble
with playing DVD, including minor lags, and long wait times, but I can deal
with that. Thanks again for all your assistance.
