Burned DVD will not play on DVD players

I am trying to backup my Hi 8 and digital 8 tapes onto DVDs. I am
uploading my videos to my computer through my old Sony digital 8
player using Sony Vegas software. The clips are being saved as avi
files. When I render them they are coming out as one mpeg file.
Today I burned the first rendered mpeg file to a DVD using Roxio
software. When I put the burned DVD in my computer, the movie pops up
and plays fine through the Windows player. When I try to play the DVD
on either of the DVD players connected to out TVs, all I get is disk
error and nothing works.

I don't know if I am missing a step in the process or what the problem
is. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Peter

Did you create a data DVD which would
be for basic archival purposes or did you
actually use DVD Authoring software to
create a Video DVD?

It's been a problem since home DVD burning caught on.
I note you are a google grouper, if you do a google search
of "burnt DVD's won't play in DVD player" but be specific about
brand and age of DVD player, you will find zillions of hits.
You could try different blank media disks, it is known that
some first generation Philips sourced drives have a problem
with DVD-R disks (The reasons are all over google). You'll
also find via google that some Sony players can be extremely
fussy about the disks. There is the now notorious example of
the very expensive (now deleted) Panasonic DVD-A7 dvd-audio
player that was actually marketed not to play home burnt disks!
It is known that some players have issues with DL and/or RW.
I have a Hi-end Sony DVD/SACD player that will not play
litescribe disks but will play some I have actually scribed a label!!
You say when attempting to play a disk you get an "error",
If on the display of the player it should be listed in the manual,
if on-screen then goto the website of that brand and check the
support link for known issues with those player(s).

The only quick method you can try is the type of disk you burn.
I'm not familiar with your burning software, but most software
will give you the option to burn disk as DVD-Video or DVD-ROM
Select "DVD-ROM" (It is still a DVD-Video, but more compatible)
Type "DVD-Video or DVD-ROM?" into google for detailed explaination.
