How do I set the attributes of the bullet icon?

Everytime I click on it and go to Format, Bullets & Numbering, it choses a
different box with a bullet in.

The problem I'm having is I can't make it do a hanging paragraph when I
press the bullet icon (i.e. bullet, space, text which wraps around with at
the same level)

Have you tried to adapt or create a style with the attributes you want? This
would avoid having to re-set the menus every time you want these attributes.
Word has a "List Bullet" default style that you can adapt to just what you
need. That style will appear in the drop-down style menu on the formatting
toolbar, or can be accessed through the Format menu, Styles & Formatting.
You can apply it to any paragraph.

Thanks Richard, but I have set up the styles as I want them, however the
people using the presentations will not be familiar with ppt, so will
automatically go to the bullet icon and forward/backward tabs and expect them
to work, which is why I'd like to set them to what I need them to look like.

Are we talking about powerpoint, or Word? You've posted in a Word group...

FWIW (assuming this is Word), you could replace the button on the toolbar with
one that looks the same, but is in reality assigned to your style.

Hi Helen,
Yes it's word and thanks for the idea but I'm not sure how to do that - can
you explain?
1. Make sure your style is ready
2. Tools/Customize/Commands
3. Make sure your document (or template) is selected from the "Save in" list at the
bottom.
4. Select "Styles" from the Category list
5. Drag your style into the toolbar, next to the built-in button you want to replace
6. Right-click your new button and choose "Default style" (so you seen an icon and
not text)
7. Right-click the built-in button and choose "Copy Button Image"
8. Right-click your style button and choose "Paste Button Image"
9. Drag the built-in button off the toolbar (onto the document) in order to remove
it.
10. Close the dialog box. Select some text and try applying the style using your new
button.
11. If it works, save the document.
