bullets and numbering - jpg

Is there a way to import a JPG picture and add it to the bullets and
numbering? I'm using Word 2003. I clicked import and browse but it doesn't
read my JPG. Do I need to convert the JPG to another file type? If so,
which one? and how?

Display the Bullets and Numbering dialog. On the Bulleted tab, select
something other than 'none'. Click Customize > Picture > Import.
