I just put together a new pc and I'm using the hard drive
from my old pc (30 gig, 7200 RPM) for the new one. The
hard drive has Windows XP installed.

I started the new system up, ran through the BIOS and when
it finally reached the point of loading Windows, it
restarts.

Of course after it did this, I got the "Windows did not
load on a previous attempt" screen where I can choose Safe
Mode, Normal mode, etc. I chose safe mode and you usually
see a long list of files it checks, then Windows XP
starts. Well, this didn't happen. It listed the first file
and just froze.

So, I restarted and tried normal mode. As soon as I hit
Enter, it freezes.

Any ideas?

You probably have problems with the HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer).
Windows XP depends on your hardware configuration. I guess installing on top
of the old installation will work. But I am not sure if there are better
ways, because I don't remember that anymore.

Do a repair install.

Thanks guys. I had a feeling that the repair install was
probably what I needed to do. I'll let you know how it
goes.

Thanks,
Jason

If you are essentially moving the hard drive onto a new environment, you
must start off with a repair reinstall, so that the system is lined up
correctly with the actual hardware in use. Set the BIOS to boot CD
before Hard disk, then boot the XP CD, start Setup (do not take
'Repair' at this stage), then after the license agreement take 'Repair
Installation'. This will retain your existing software installations
and most settings. But Updates will have to be run again, especially
SP1; and if you have drivers that only arrived with that, like USB 2
ones, you will need to update drivers for the devices concerned. You
may find that things like virtual memory settings and some aspects of
appearance have reverted to defaults

This should retain your activation status, though if you have never
registered you may have the setup suggest it now (don't bother). But
you may well find you have made so many changes that you need to
activate again by phoning in
