build help

I want to build a computer for my dad for christmas, I dont need the
fastest computer, just enough for some databasing, some graphics editing
like corel, and a decent amount of speed, 2.0GHZ. I would like some
recomendations on a mother board, processor and memory. I have an old
soundcard and video card ethernet etc. Just need the vital components. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Try an Intel 865 PERLL motherboard, 512 MB Crucial memory (might as well
go 3200 as it's the same price), and an Antec Sonata case. Video
for 2d apps doesn't matter, just make sure it's 4x or 8x AGP.
Skip hyperthreading - no need right now and it'll be cheaper later -
so go with an Intel P4 2.0 - 2.4 GHz.

This has been a rock solid combination for me. I'd recommend Intel
over AMD if your dad is even slightly uncomfortable with omputers.

Thanks Caden, about how much did this run you, if you dont mind my asking?

Here's the invoice from newegg:

CASE ANTEC|MID TOWER SONATA RET $99.00
MB P4 INTEL 865PE BOXD865PERLL RTL $123.00
VGA GIGABYTE|RADEON 9200 128M $67.00
CPU P4/2.4BGHz 533M 478PIN/512K RTL $164.00
HD 36GB|WD 10,000 WD360GD 8MB OEM $112.00
DVD|LITE ON 16X XJ-HD166/165H BK% $30.99

Subtotal $595.99
Tax $46.19
Shipping and Handling charge $17.99
Amount Paid $660.17

If I were to cut corners, I'd probably get a smaller hard drive & less
expensive case to save about $75-$100. Any more cut corners will be
a different CPU. AMD might bring the price down another $50-$75.

That's hardly possible unless you buy a used one. You didn't buy a big hard
drive, you bought a small, fast one. Unless I'm deciphering your codes
wrong.

Yeah, actually, I meant a 7200 RPM drive - a slower drive, not a smaller
one. Thanks for catching it. WD has a 80 GB 7200 RPM drive for $75.00.

Buy him a full or barebones whitebox system.

Caden:

You've listed the wrong processor for that motherboard. You need the P4C 800
Mhz.
