Bug with lists in WOrd?

Ok. I must be doing something wrong in word 2007 when I try to use numbered
lists.
I am following the exact steps from any online help and from 2 different
texts.

I begin in a new doc.
I click on the page and click the Numbered List button and a selection of
list styles appear.
I pick a style
A number appears and I being typing.
I click Enter and the cursor moves down but there is no number.
I type and hit enter again and still no number.
What am I missing?

Thanks for any troubleshooting help or ideas!

Make sure you only press ENTER once.

When you press ENTER once, the automatic numbering/bulleting creates the
next sequential entry at the same level

When you press ENTER twice
ï‚¡ If you are at the top level, you create an empty paragraph formatted with
the Normal style; each succeeding time you press ENTER, you create another
empy paragraph formatted with the Normal style
ï‚¡ If you are not at the top level, you create a list item at the next higher
level
ï¬ When you press ENTER three times at the 3rd or lower level, you create a
list item at two levels higher; at the 2nd level, you create an empty
paragraph formatted with the Normal style
ï‚¡ You achieve the same results when you press ENTER one more time than is
necessary to reach the top level

Actually we just found the cause but we appreciate your input.
What was actually going on was that it was applying styles to the numbering,
including the heading 1 style. The heading 1 style was set up so that it
reverted to normal style when you pressed enter, which "cancelled out" the
number styles.

We fixed it by modifying the list style to apply no style to that level of
numbering besides the actual numbers.

Thanks again!

But note that since styles contribute to numbering stability, instead of
removing the "link" between the numbering level and the style, it would make
more sense to change the "Style for following paragraph" setting in the
style definition.

Or to link the numbering levels to non-heading styles. I know this is
different in Word 2007, but in the List Gallery in Word 2003 and earlier,
some of the numbering schemes are linked to headings (they display Heading
1, Heading 2, etc. in the preview pane), and others are not. If you use the
List Number series, for example, instead of the Heading series (and
explicitly link the numbering levels to the List Number styles), you will
avoid the problem without perverting the heading styles.
