Bug in April 2006 MS Security Update?

I have XP home edition service pack 2 pentium PC:

After installing the April 2006 MS Security Updates (approx 7), MS Word
2003 and MS Excel 2003 could not "Save as" their work to a different
directory, without experiencing "Save As (not responding)" error
message. I was trying simply to Save As my work to a different
directory, and this problem consistently occured in both Excel and
Word. I rebooted the PC, and the problem remained. This problem may
affect other MS Office products.

I then did a System Restore to the day before the April 2006 MS
Security Update, and all problems disappeared, with all applications.

I tried this theory twice (that the April MS Update was causing the
problem):
1. before April 2006 MS Security Update - no problems
2. After April 2006 MS Security Update - problems exist as stated
above.

I would like Microsoft input, or anyone else's input on this problem.
As it stands, I cannot and will not install the existing April 2006
Security Update.

It happened to me too and like you I had to use system restore. It wouldn't
let Outlook Express run properly.

I downloaded the 7 updates on to 3 computers. When I tried to open Outlook
Express on two of them, a message appeared asking if I wanted to have OE as
my default email program. I clicked YES and that was okay. On the third
machine, we use MSN Premium, with an online hotmail address. There were some
issues when we tried to use this, which we satisfied by uninstalling MS
Outlook, not used on this machine.

Only one of the 7 downloads had to do with Outlook, but it did seem to have
an effect on the general balance.

I do dislike it when experts only tell ordinary folk, seeking enlightenment,
that they should post in a different place. I am sure that is good advice,
but a little direct help would be better.

Same thing happened to me with Word. I did not test other Office
applications.
I am reproducing below the gist of what I had posted earlier
(http://groups.google.co.in/group/mi...4cfcf9/3d27a6afcbb7eb33?#doc_4c3538b2606488b8)
..
"On the off chance, I restarted Windows in safe mode and deleted all
files in "Temp" and "Temporary Internet Files" folders. Then restarted
in normal mode. There has been no problem after that. I am not sure the

problem was solved by what I did, but it may be worth trying."

Re this bug. I just tried again on two different PC's and on one left out the
Outlook Express update. That PC seems to be fine though I've not tried it all
yet. The other one that had all the updates again would not work, in spite of
deleteing the temp files, so be warned it's not so easy to get rid of the
problems.

HOW do we tell Microsoft? Does anyone know?

I'm not aware of why cleaning out %temp% and/or TIF would make any difference
in this (though it certainly won't hurt). Perhaps that was an unrelated event.

See the suggested fix at the MSKB article linked to by

if applicable.
