Buffalo LPV2-USB Print Server - help required

Hi there.

Does anyone out there have a Buffalo LPV2-USB-TX1 print server.

I have just bought one of these and am trying to use it in the UK with
a Windows XP Home based PC and laptop and a Netgear DG834G Wireless
ADSL Firewall router.

I have my main PC connected to the router via ethernet and my
(Centrino CPU) laptop connected via wireless), and I have previously
used another print server (Belkin) successfully with this set-up.

The problem I am encountering is that when I try to run the LPV2
Manager software in order to identify my printer (Epson 830U) I get a
rapidly recurring message "TCP/IP doesn't work properly" on both my
desktop PC and my laptop.

Has anyone else had a similar problem or can anyone offer any advice?
I would assume that if tehre was a genuine TCP/IP problem, my previous
print server would not have worked and I would be experiencing other
problems with my wireless network.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

HI,

Just worked out what should have been obvious. The problem was caused
by my Norton firewall. However, I still have a problem. I can now
connect to the print server but when I attempt to configure the server
it asks me for a password.

I'm not sure if the server I bouht is new or has been previously used.
Does this server come with a default password or has a previous owner
set a password. If that is the case is there any way to return to a
default set-up? There does not appear to be a re-set button or option
on the server like there was with my previous print server.

Anyone able to help?

Thanks

I don't have that model of print server (I have one old Intel model and an
SMC ADSL Router with built in print server) but I have heard that some
devices will ask for a password when new and expect nothing to be entered
there - i.e. just attempt to enter through it. If the machines your using
are both running XP many print servers don't require software to be
installed to function under these OSs and should be picked up natively.
Installing the printer is just a matter of creating a TCP/IP port for the
printer and then installing the printer after that - XP should guide you
through. What does the manual say about it - if there isn't a paper copy
supplied with it, there should at least be a pdf on the CD? If that's not an
option then there should be a downloadable manual on the manufacturers
website at least.

Thanks for the reply.

I have now managed to get the print server to work. The person I
purchased it from forgot that he had set up a password, but gave me a
couple of possibilities just in case. Sure enough, one of them was
correct.

According to the manual (which I received with the server) the server
appears to be supplied with a 'blank' password. This is fine unless
you set up a password and then forget what it is. There seems to be no
way to reset the server to its default settings except through the
administration panels (for which you need the password). There is no
reset button on the server.

I guess I'll be ok until I forget the password.

Thanks.

I'm pleased you've now got it working. Looking at there website here:
http://www.buffalotech.com/KB/index.php?ToDo=view&questId=10&catId=19 I see
it reads: "NOTE: Please keep in mind, that the print server does NOT have an
external INIT button. The only way to reset it back to factory default
settings is through the LPV manager utility." so there you have it - they'll
have some software to clear the password if you forget it. I knew there must
be some way around a forgotten password otherwise imagine all the headaches
that their tech support people would encounter explaining this to forgetful
users.

Unfortunately, the only way to access the LPV Manager utility is to
type in the password (that you have already forgotten).

So, the only way to reset the password is to return the unit to base.
Unfortunately for me, this option only exists for users with a US
shipping address, and I am based in the UK.

I'd better not forget my password.

The good news is that the print server works very well, and that the
Buffalo support desk was very helpful.

Thanks.

When a password is intended to protect against remote interference,
it makes sense to me to write it in large black letters inside the
device case. Lets face it, if the enemy has physical undisturbed
access you are a sick puppy anyhow.

I see, there was me thinking the LPV Manager Utiity was some software which
could be run on the device to reset its password but its actually the
software which is used for general configuration. I like that idea of
writing the password inside the case (as long as you remember it is written
there) - or even on the outide since hackers are unlikely to see it . Scan
sell Buffalo brand equipment in the UK and Buffalo have a more local web
address of www.buffalotech.co.uk - perhaps they could help if you have
further problems.
