BSOD

Computer is HP with restore partition (no restore CD's):

1. Replaced motherboard with exact same model (different serial number,
of course) which was done at a PC repair shop (the old CPU was put on
the new board).
2. Months later, had to do system restore doing reformat/restore from
HP's restore partition.
3. Restore went well and when system reboots, it POSTS OK, but then goes
to BSOD.
4. Since the restore process was done, there was no way to 'go back' to
prior config.
5. Removed HDD and put in spare and installed MY XP Pro and system was
fine (then I removed HDD and replaced with original - I just wanted to
make sure it wasn't something else causing problems).
6. Talked friend into getting XP Pro copy - retail.
7. Installed it over HP's stuff and all works well.

Question: Why did the system work when brought home from repair shop and
not after HP's restore procedure since the MOBO was exact same match as
original except different serial numbers? BTW: There was nothing added
to this system, it's all the original stuff...

What is the actual content of the BSOD? There are thousands of
different possibilities and most of them have different causes and
therefore different cures.

Good luck
