BSOD at atikmdag.sys

Having problems clean installing Vista RC1 560 in second partition (XP
installed in First), I get as far as Completing installation and then I get
the BSOD so quick that it's annoying, However if I use the “do not restart on
stop†option via F8, the problem appears in my case to be with atikmdag.sys

My PC is…..

Gigabyte GA-7VAX motherboard
AMD Athlon XP3000+ 2.17Ghz Processor
1.5 Gb Ram
Maxtor IDE Hard disk 300GB
Radeon 9600 XT Graphics with 256MG Ram
Pioneer DVD ROM DVD-105
HL-DT-ST-CD-RW GCE

I have tried booting into XP prior to finalisation to delete the
atikmdag.sys and also tried low graphics mode at final stage of Installation
but it’s always seems the same, once a BSOD has occurred Vista will never
finish the installation and requests a complete re-install?

Technical information on First BSOD error

*** STOP: 0x00000007E (0xC0000005, 0x9826F667, 0x90CA44, 0x90C93740)

*** atikmdag.sys -address 9826F667 base at 98240000, Datestamp 44e21406

At least I am getting further than I was with the Beta 2 that I also
received through the post, as that would never even copy the files from the
DVD to the Hard disk?

OK, I re-read again methods for fully removing atikmdag.sys from a Vista
Install at the point where it cannot cause a BSOD! Basically I was not
catching the Vista Installation early enough to stop atikmdag.sys being
transfered from the driverstore to the driver directory within Windows,
System32

Once I did this in a manner that atikmdag.sys could never be installed
EUREKA, Windows Vista running on my PC ;-)

This is a particular forum thread which helped guide me to my conclusion
that all I needed to do was make sure atikmdag.sys was removed. (Even though
this thread is for a Nvidia driver issue)

BTW, I have subsequently installed the Vista RC1 Ati Radeon Graphics drivers
and so far am having no problems with Vista RC1 Ultimate edition.
