I having a very similar problem seeing and accessing a share on a brand new
dell dimension 4700 with SP2 pre-installed on it, with XP Pro. I can see the
computer on the workgroup, but I cannot see any of the shares. I double
checked the registry setting for RestricAnonymous and it is set to 0. I have
disabled firewalls to see if they are preventing as well as opened the
corresponding file and print sharing ports and no such luck. I am running all
the same software on my computers for firewall and antivirus(McAfee).
When I try to install the browstat utility it quickly flashes a command
window and them disappears. When I try to run browstat status is says the
following: 'browstat' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
I am hoping this browstat will help me fix my problem, please help.
Paul,
Browstat may help you diagnose your problem.
What folder did you copy browstat into?
First I just extracted it to my desktop for easy access, then I placed it on
the c: to see if that would make it run. No luck in either situation.
Paul,
If you place it in "C:\" (is that what you mean by "C:"?), run it as
"c:\browstat status". Or read this article, and put it into a path folder.

Ok, I went ahead and realized what I was doing wrong for the browstat
utility. Included are two "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" outputs for
two computers both running XP Pro with SP2. Both are Dell, one is an Inspiron
6000 laptop and the other is a Dimension 4700. The Diemnsion is not allowing
me to access shares, but the laptop is. I even disabled both McAfee and
Windows firewalls and tried to connect, so I am guessing it is not the
firewalls. I even opened the corresponding ports with both firewalls to test
them on as well.
Remember both restrictanonymouse values are set at "0" as well.

Paul,
OK, looking at browstat:
# Both report the master and backup browser as PC4.
# Both report no gratuitous protocols.
# Both report "error = 53".
# Both report 5 servers and 7 domains (does this agree with your knowledge?).
Looking at ipconfig:
# There's no IPV6.
# Both computers are connecting to the DHCP server, so no physical problem
(probably).
# Both computers have Node Type Hybrid.
Hybrid, aka H-node, queries the name server first. Try changing the type to
Broadcast, if no DNS or WINS server on the network, wait a while, and try
browstat again.

Maybe browstat and ipconfig from PC4 would be interesting.
But the firewall is very possibly a problem, even so. You cannot dismiss a
third party firewall, by simply disabling it. You have to either un install it,
carefully, following all vendor instructions, or enable and configure it
properly. And how did you disable Windows Firewall? Please read ALL of this
article.

Here is the browstat and ipconfig for PC4:

Paul,
This one is perfectly in synch with the other 2, except for the "error = 53".
This almost has to be a firewall problem.
Well, I uninstalled the McAfee firewall, and disabled the windows firewall
through the security center. What's next?
I even tried the fix you had posted in another thread on the LSP-Winsock
Layer and that did not help.
Do you want me to try the node issue you talked about switching to a b
instead of an h? The article you provided does not show how to do this in XP.
I reviewed the instructions for Windows 2000, but when I went in the registry
to try what it said, I did not see anything like it was describing.
Paul,
My normal note about KB160177 would have included a note that Windows 2000 is NT
V5.0, and XP is NT V5.1. So the article does apply, it just wasn't updated.
I have to wonder why you didn't find that value for that key, on that computer.
If the value is not defined, ipconfig should show with Node Type Unknown, and it
should be treated as Broadcast. You did look at
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters \
NodeType]?
Do you really have 7 computers, and none of which can see shares on this new
computer? Check the Hidden parameter. What are the shares that can't be seen?
Do they end in "$" maybe?

Which computer did you try the LSP/Winsock solution on? Did you try all 4
solutions?
