Browsing Problem With URL's

Jim

I have been having a problem with my browser not
recognizing URL's unless "WWW" precedes the URL address.

Here is an Example that would fail:

http://support.microsoft.com

But here is an example that would work:

http://www.support.microsoft.com

I didn't use to have this problem and very often would go
to FILE > OPEN in the top left corner and just type a name.
That fails now fails if I don't specify "WWW". If a URL
fails because of a DNS error, I can "insert" a "www." in
the address bar and press "GO" and it will connect.

There apparently is a setting that I have disabled
somewhere at some point, I just can't locate.

Please Help!!!

Thank you in advance.

Jim

Some program (usually spyware\parasite) may have overridden the URL prefix
setting?

Includes: Repair the corrupted or altered (spyware) HTTP prefixes
See section: Various Registry Fixes = "RepairDefaultPrefix.reg"
[or - manually]
Open Regedit to the following locations and verify the below default
entries:
Start | Run (type) "regedit" (no quotes)

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPre

@="http://"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes]
"ftp"="ftp://"
"gopher"="gopher://"
"home"="http://"
"mosaic"="http://"
"www"="http://"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks]
"{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}"=""

Thank You Sir!
That fixed it. It was missing 2 values one for:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVers
ion\URL\DefaultPrefix] @="http://"

and the other one:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\InternetExplorer\URL
SearchHooks] "{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}"=""

It now goes to any site that I pick...
Thank you very much!

Jim
