Browser won't connect to internet

I've set up a modem connection to my cellphone provider's
internet access. I can connect fine, and I can ping IP
numbers and URLs via the modem in the cellphone. However,
I cannot get either IE or Mozilla browsers to work. It
appears that they do send out data, based on the data
indicators on the phone, and it appears that data comes
back to the computer. However, nothing is displayed on
the browser.

The computer is a Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop that usually
is connected into my LAN via the NIC in the port replicator.
For the application using the cellphone modem, however, the
computer is not plugged into the replicator. It is
completely standalone.

As a follow-up, this problem also affects the LAN connection
when I disconnect the phone/modem and plug the computer back
into the port replicator. Whatever is screwed up by adding
the USB modem connect stays screwed up with the modem
disconnected. Hooked into my LAN, I can ping IPs, I can't
ping URLs, and I can't use a browser.

I don't see anything unusual with route print or ipconfig.

Help please?
