Howdy, all. Every time I attempt to open Internet
Explorer, I immediately get an error window which
says "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and
needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

If I click to see what data the error report contains,
here is what it says:

AppName: iexplore.exe
AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106
ModName:syspi32.dll
ModVer: 0.0.0.0
Offset: 000143ce

It started doing this about six weeks ago, or maybe a
month ago, out of the clear blue sky. Nothing else is
wrong with this machine. It's less than six months old.

Ideas?

John,

No information found about this DLL. Disable the related browser helper object using Toolbarcop and see if that helps:

Using ToolbarCop to remove the unwanted Toolband, Toolbar Icons and BHO:

Download Ad-Aware from www.lavasoftusa.com, scan the system and eliminate the parasites.

syspi32.dll does not appear to be a Microsoft file.

First eliminate any scumware.
See
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.
CWShredder is also available here:

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back

I'm the poster of the "browser will not open" message,
and although I am delighted to see that two people have
posted replies, I can't read them. Why is that? What
can I do to fix this situation?

thanks
JOHN

John,
That silly CDO interface to the newsgroups appears to be broken.

Let me add that OE is a fine newsreader.

Okay, I downloaded those programs, and I used them-- although they're not at all user-friendly and so I have no idea what they accomplished-- and nothing has changed. What do I do?

Did you update AdAware and SpyBot S & D before using them? What was the
response to your posting of the HijackThis log to the specified forums?
