Browser Identity Problem

Can someone tell me what governs browser identity? I'm
having a problem with my winxp pro sp1 system's access to
some internet websites and my browser is not recognized.
It doesn't matter which browser I use IE 6.0, Mozilla
Firefox, Opera, and when its not recognized the page
layout makes it hard to navigate. For instance
Yahoo.....If I go to Yahoo mail I get a warning message
that my browser is not optimized to view the mail page
and suggests IE6, Netscape etc. If I go
to .......Macromedia's website for a flash player.....
the website does not know what flash player I
need......What area in the winXp OS governs browsers? Is
it the registry? System services? The .ini
files?.....I've tried reinstalling the operating system
(repair) option several times. When I use a different
computer to access the websites mentioned above with the
same type browsers everything is fine.
I'd like to know so thoughts on this problem if possible.

Thanks, Curt.
