Browser Check

Last night I ran the browser security test, consisting of 22 hacks, for
Win98/IE6 at this site:

http://bcheck.scanit.be/bcheck/

According to the test results, I had one critical vulnerabilty:

<Microsoft Internet Explorer Object Data Remote Execution Vulnerability
(eeye20030821)
Description
This bug allows a malicious web page to execute any programs on your
computer. A malicious hacker can take complete control over your computer
using this bug. The bug can be exploited by a web page you browse or HTML
email mesage you open.>......

.......<Additional Information
* Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-040
* October 2003, Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer (828750)
* eEye Security Advisory. Internet Explorer Object Data Remote Execution
Vulnerability
* Http-equiv's Exploit Variant
* GreyMagic Software Exploit Variant>

It then suggested the remedy, Windows Update. However, WU gave me a clean
bill of
health. The Microsoft articles refer to IE6 SP-1, which is installed and
appears in add-remove. So, curious to know what the problem might be and how
to fix it.

In this instance, Windows Update is right and the scan you did isn't.

In all likelihood, you have MS06-021 (Cumulative Security Update for IE; 14
Jun-06) installed. MS06-021 supersedes (replaces) MS03-040 so you don't
need the latter.

MS06-021 was the last Cumulative Update for IE to be released for Win98.
Support for Win98 and WinME ended in Jul-06 and no additional updates will
be released for these OSS.
