Browser barely working, takes forever to load a web page

My newly installed AVG 7.5 took 90 minutes to scan my computer which only
has 5 GB of data. Not great.

Gary,

I ran downloaded and ran the upgraded AVG, there were no viruses on my
system. I downloaded and ran the upgraded Ad-Aware, it found about 400
objects that I quaranteened. But my IE problem, with the extremely slow
loading of web pages, persists. So now it looks like the next step is
Hijack This.

When you mention "invaders," it appears you're not talking about the
basic firewall. If you're talking about the Internet Security Suite, I'd
ditch it post haste. There are plenty of high-quality *free*
anti-malware apps. You mentioned AVG; this handles viruses. You also
mentioned Spybot S&D; this is good for spyware. I would also recommend
AdAware in addition. You may use older versions of Zone Alarm or Outpost
as your firewall.

Also, running Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite simultaneously with
another anti-virus will cause conflicts and slow your PC down.

There's a learning curve with any new (AV) app. Users to whom I've
recommended it (vs AVG) like it and have ventured no complaints/problems.
AntiVir shares the same database as Avira's more high-end apps.

I'm curious to see what your HJT log looks like. Why don't you post a
link to the Web forum you're using?

BTW how many other AV use that questionable proxy technique
exhibited by ashWebSv.exe? Is it a default or a user choice?
I think when performance issues come up for IE we should ask
if something like it is in effect. To be "On Topic" here <w>
would Larry's AVG be doing something similar too?

I just checked out a couple of these forums. They're talking about a
four-five day wait before someone looks at the Hijack This log.

I registered at Castle Cops forum. Here's the link where I posted my
question and my HijackThis Log, under the nickname Dunlop. I guess I just
have to wait now and keep checking back. Any suggestions on what to do next
other than wait?

These online forums are a complicated, confusing environment. I mean the
number of different forums, and figuring out where you are located.

For example, I successfully posted my comment with the copy of the HJ log,
and I am looking at it, but that page does not link me to a list of comments
where my comment is listed along with others. I'm not even sure which forum
my comment is in, though I initially chose the HJ forum. It's insanely
complicated.

Thanks,
Larry

This is insanely complicated.

How many different warnings, requirements, procedures, rules, regulations,
announcements, all posted in different places, must we become expert in,
simply in order for someone to look at the log and tell us what to do to fix
it? Why are things made so incredibly over-complicated???

On top of that, the physical arrangement of these online forums is terribly
confusing. It's not a self-explanatory, logically organized website, where
you can readily see where you need to go and what is where. It's as though
it's deliberately designed to be as confusing as possible.

And now you're telling me you can already see what the nature of my
infection is?

For the former, see

"Fun Web Products "My Web Search" Removal Instructions and Help" at
http://www.pchell.com/support/mywebsearch.shtml

I also noticed you have the Google toolbar; older versions of this can
sometimes cause problems.

Finally, since you presumably have an old computer, keep in mind that
you need to run as lean as possible. That may mean ditching add-ons and
cutting out a good number of processes, such as qttask.exe and
realsched.exe. Good sites to learn about what isn't necessary:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/

http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm

Hardware-wise,

How large is your hard drive and how much free space do you have?

How much memory do you have?

What kind of CPU do you have, and how fast is it?

Keep in mind that you can post to any number of HJT forums on the Web.
Some are more active than others. I'm sure you'll get plenty of timely
feedback.

L

Larry

Daave,

I'd love to cut out qtask, it's always in my close program dialog and I have
no idea how to get rid of it. Also Atitask.

I also have something called Bridge that keeps popping up, and also
something called Undertone that keeps popping up.

I do not have a lot of stuff running on my computer. Just the basics plus
Zone Alarm etc. I do not have Virus ware running all the time.

As for removing My Web Search, it is not in Add/Remove Program, but there
was a My Web Search folder in Program Files, so I deleted that.

I've uninstalled the Google tool bar and deleted the Google folder from
Program files. Will install the more current Google toolbar later, when and
If I get IE working again.

I have a 6 GB hard drive, with just under 1 GB free. I know that's not much.

Memory 288 MB

Computer speed 333 MH.
