Broken links extremely slow

For the past few days, whenever I run into a link that is
apparently obsolete, the browser will sit for a looong
time (sometimes several minutes) with "Web site found.
Waiting for reply.." displayed in the status bar, before
finally displaying a "page not found" error. Previously, I
would usually get the error message in several seconds. Is
there something I could have accidentally changed that is
causing this?
