Broadband activity

I am running XP home with my PC connected to a router and then a cable modem.
Everything runs fine. If I have no programmes running sometimes I notice the
netwok icon showing continuous activity (both send and receive) for minutes
on end. In task manager the only thing active seems to be System Idle. With
what is computer communicating and why? Is it suspicious? (I also have
Defender, Spybot-search and destroy and Norton anti virus; first thing I
checked was if any of these was updating over the web, but it seems not.)

Thanks

If it is not continues traffic I will take the Computer having a little chat
with the Router to renew or check Traffic ( fro your Norton or Defender or
any app you given an access).
If you still suspicious download the Filemon or Processor explorer and
check the background in real time:

Thanks for your help.

My problem is Khost and Kservice. I think both these date from when I
insattled 4oD (The channel 4 videostreaming service). I think what I need to
do is to stop them running at start up and only run if I open 4oD. Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi Tim,
You can certainly do, by Opening the Run command and type in:
msconfig click [OK] and on the System configuration click on StartUp Tab
and uncheck the lines there for this applications.
Another to look for here:
Open Windows explorer and locate this path:
C:\Document and settings\Local user\Start menu\Programs\Start Up and
delete the programs from there which you don't want it to start.
Also some programs have configuration Options to uncheck from starting up
with windows.

Just found this:

which gives further explanation.

I have stopped the various KService things running at start up, but 4oD
obviously does not start them when opened as it refuses to work unless you
re-install it along with Kservice. So it seems if you have 4oD on your
computer you have to put up with a vast amount of web access background
activity.
