Bring site "into" Frontpage...?

Howdy,

In the past, I designed and then maintained our (small) site with
Frontpage.

Recently, we decided to have the site professionally redesigned. It
was done by a fellow who did not use Frontpage.

It is now complete, but our current situation raises some questions:

1: The site has been uploaded to our webhosting service. I want to
have the site on my own system as well so that I can better maintain
it. I assume that I can "publish" it from its current location to my
own system. Is that the best way to "get a copy" or is there another
approach that is more appropriate.

2: Of course if I add pages to the site (as I have to do in the near
future) I want to be certain that they are created to match those
pages that are already on the site. Once I have the site on my system
(by whatever method), it will not have the Frontpage templates, or
styles. How can I "retro-create" those from the new pages that I now
have?

3: Are there any other things I need to do so that I can use Frontpage
conveniently to manage this new "not-built-with-Frontpage" site?

From what you are saying the site does not have the FP Server Extensions so your best option is to use a 3rd party FTP to download
the whole site to a folder on you PC and then Open that folder in FP
- you will be limited to FP FTP publishing or 3rd party FTP (unless you have the host apply the FP SE)

mentioned, I used FP to create the original web that is now replaced.

But the SE may be clobbered by your developer that did not use them and FTP'd
- Have your host repair or reinstall them, then you can just File Open Web , (enter your site URL) and File Publish back to your PC

With the addition...yes you will have everything you need once you PUBLISH the web down to your local machine (and FP SE are working correctly on your server).

Even if the designer didn't include blank template pages, you can create new pages by chosing a page you want to use as a template and doing a Save As or Save As a .tem page.

With the addition...yes you will have everything you need once you PUBLISH the web down to your local machine (and FP SE are working correctly on your server).

I have a question about another aspect of this issue:

Assuming that I create a template as you suggest. If I then create new
pages with that template I can easily modify all of them at once just
by modifying the template.

Of course, that would not also modify those pages that were created
without the template.

What is the best way to handle that aspect of the situation?

I suppose that one way would be to create the template, and cut &
paste the contents of the old pages into it to "re-create" them, but I
do wonder if that is the best approach.

Hi again,

I have continued to experiment with this, but am having problems that
confuse me:

Here's what I have done -

I opened a page that I want to use as the basis for the template. I
removed text and graphics that do not belong in the template. I then
saved the file as XXXXX.TEM as per your suggestion.

Then, the surprise:

I go to Create a new Normal Page and dropdown the menu | Page | My
Templates. XXXXX appears as I would expect, but when I double click
it, it opens WITH the text and graphics that I deleted before saving.
That has me baffled (and I have done it a few times with the same
confusing result.)

Also, if I just click to create a new Normal Page FP still uses the
old template that I ultimately wish to replace.

How can I kill that former template?

The Automatic Update of DWT does not currently work on Server based sites running the FP SE
- you need to open all pages affected to update those pages from the modified template
It works fine on Disc based webs (if that's what you are working on locally) and a WSS based sites

Thanks for the info about the drop-down...

Now, I have succeeded in saving a template called BASIC.DWT. I put it
in the "_shared templates" folder, but...

When I attempt to create a new page and look at all the available
templates, BASIC does not appear among them.

Also, (and related, I suspect) how can I remove from the available
selection templates that I no longer need?

Might you answer the other part of my question:

Right now, when I attempt to create a new page, FP opens a blank page
based upon our old template.

What would be the name of the template that FP uses as its default? Is
it NORMAL.TEM or some such?

Also, how can I delete that template? Or, how can I tell FP not to use
it as the Normal page?

When you click to the New Page button or select File Menu | New | Page, FP will use normal.tem.

I would only modify this page to have common things that you would want to have appear in any web
that you create. I would not modify if to be used with a specific web.

I normally just create a page in my web, the way I want it to appear, and then do a Save As each
time I need to create new page within the specific web.

Note; When you create a template using the Save As function, do not include links, etc, as the
template is not stored within the web, instead is stored in the same general location as normal.tem,
so that it is available to any web that you might create.
