Bring Back Proper Shortcut Functionality to Outlook

My boss just asked me how he could create a shortcut to some of his
non-Outlook files as he used to do in the previous version. From what I'm
reading in the Discussion Groups, he can't any more. I suggest you bring it
back, as it makes life a lot easier if you can pull up information while
you're in Outlook in order to respond to an e-mailed question from a customer.

version of outlook? did you look at the shortcut pane? what type of files
does he need to link to and what happens when he tries?

We're using Outlook 2003. If you go to the Shortcut pane and click "Create
Shortcut", it only allows you to link to other Outlook Folders (rather silly
if you ask me, since those links are already built in). He has a folder that
contains various kinds of files, Word, Excel, PDF, and htm mostly, that he
used to be able to link to in Outllook 2000. Now he wants to create a
similar folder for the new show because he's getting a lot of files he wants
to keep without using up all his mailbox space on the network, but Outlook
2003 will not let him do it. The last couple of years, he got round it by
simply keeping the messages with attachments in a separate folder, but he
keeps getting "mailbox full" messages from our system administrator, who's
been telling him to store these files somewhere besides the Outlook server.

It still works in all Outlook versions but looks different to older
versions. It's in the new Navigation Pain in 2003.

In 2003 click the Shortcuts icon (black arrow) in the bottom left corner of
the screen (Navigation Pane).

Click the New Group button and type the name of your group eg Boring
Reports. Then use My Computer to browse to the reports.

With Outlook and My Computer both open (in 2 panes works well) drag the file
from My Computer to the Boring Reports blue heading and release. Now you
have a shortcut to a file (or folder or drive - whatever you browse to and
drag there).
