Bright Speck Of Light In Monitor After Shut Down

I am working on WinXP Pro & have been using a 13" monitor (not a TFT)
since last 8 years or so. Except for once (about 9 months back when
there was a blast which was accompanied by a loud noise on the rear
side of the monitor where it connects to the CPU), I have never faced
any problems till date. I got the monitor repaired successfully but
since last 2 days, I have noticed that when I shut down my PC, just
about a second or two after the monitor screen turns black (indicating
it has been turned off), a dazzling speck of light (which, I guess, is
blue in color) appears momentarily right at the center of the monitor
& then disappears.

Is this something to worry about? What could be probably causing this?

This is caused by the remaining High Voltage not being properly dissipated,
more than likely over time you will end up with a spot being burned in at
that location. 8 years is a long time for a CRT monitor and yours may be on
its last legs.

Thanks, JS, for the response. I prefer to use the monitor as long as
it dies (& then cremate it with full state honors!) but will it affect
the CPU in any way while I continue using it?

I can't give you a 100% assurance that when a monitor fails there will be no
damage to the motherboard/CPU since the cable is connected to the video
card, but in your case and in most nearly all others I think you should be
OK until and when the monitor fails.

But why not start looking for a replacement now, since you are using on a
13" monitor, see if any of your friends have an old 17" they are not using
and willing to sell or give away, you will appreciate the extra viewing size
with a 17" CRT.

Back in the days of tube TVs, both B&W and color, this used to be
very common. It's caused by the deflection circuits stopping instantly
while there is still high voltage on the picture tube anode, and the
cathode is still hot enough for electron emission. The electrons are
fired straight at the center of the screen.
