Hi,

Just recently upgraded to a new PC with WinXP. Prior to this I had a
Win98 desktop and a WinMe laptop. I created a briefcase on the laptop
to syncrhonize to almost 4 Gb of data on the Win98 desktop and it
worked seamlessly (barring the occasional lapse into orphaned files)
for years.

Now I have a new XP machine and I could not get a briefcase newly
created on the laptop to synch to it. I was able to create a briefcase
on the XP, copy to the laptop, work on files - but then it wouldn't
update. I could copy it back to the XP and update but, even reducing
data to a little over 2 Gb, it takes say too long to copy back and
forth -- and I'm not convinced all the data is copying. A right click
on Properties shows different file and byte counts.

The new machine has a Norton firewall which I disable when trying to
update the briefcase. The connection is peer-to-peer through a Linksys
hub. I'm a network nit-wit so I may have some settings wrong - but I
can connect and copy files from one machine to the other.

This is driving me crazy. Anybody have any ideas or suggestions? A

Thanks!

I suggest you look into either Offline Files (if you have XP Pro) or,
www.centered.com 's "SecondCopy" as an alternative. I haven't used briefcase
for years and remember having a million problems with it in the past.....I
think it's provided now mainly for legacy reasons, as it's definitely not
the best thing out there anymore.

Another option would be a batch file running an xcopy or robocopy command,
but you might prefer a GUI - I like SecondCopy and use it for my laptop
users all the time.

Thanks. It wasn't clear to me whether Offline Files would work on
either a peer-to-peer network (since the documentation references a
server) or if it would work with a WinMe laptop. (Told you I was a
network nit-wit.)

I will take a look at SecondCopy - that may be the solution.

I really appreciate the suggestion.

Yep.

WinME as a host, sure. Not as a client.

I think it's a lot nicer than offline files anyway....they should have a
free eval you can download, too.

I got the free eval and it seems to work fine. I will use it a couple
of days to be sure and then fork over the $. Well worth it to avoid
the hassles of the briefcase.

Thanks very much.

You're welcome; good luck.
