briefcase orphan

I have my main desktop, and have just had to reload my laptop, which always
used to have a briefcase with the desktop stuff linked in there. For some
reason, now when I am dragging things in, they instantly appear as orphans.
Is there some setting after the reload which I overlooked, or what's going on?
 
Great question. I am having the same problem, and was wondering if maybe it
had something to do with just briefcasing on the office's netowrk, and not
using a specilized transfer cable. Let me know if you find out anything, as
I will likewise.
