Briefcase is slow

Hi,

I use Briefcase to synchronize folders between two machines. I find that if
the source machine is shutdown, the briefcase machine takes a few minutes to
display the contents of the folder. Any idea why this is?

Also, I thought I would try SyncToy, but it requires I install .NET
Framework 1.1.4322. I already have version 2.0 installed!?! Do I really
have to install the backlevel version also?

..NET 2.0 is not backwards-compatible to .NET 1.1, so yes you need both.

Hello Bob,

Thank you for using newsgroup!

I agree with our MVP Richard's opinion. .NET 2.0 is not
backwards-compatible to .NET 1.1.

I have exactly the same problem, even if I don't shutdown my machine.

Were you able to solve this problem? How?

(I don't have "SyncToy").

Thanks!!!

I'm not Bob, but I play him on TV.

Briefcase is old and clunky and I don't know that you'll get a lot of
replies related to it.

(I don't have "SyncToy").

You can download it :)

(and yes, you can have .NET framework 1.1 and 2.0 installed at the same
time).

Briefcase of Microsoft is so slow, we should try other backup
softwares.

I beg to differ.

Briefcase wasn't slow on my previous XP laptop ; I have about 5,400 files
in 9 Briefcase folders on my laptop. Each evening I update them with my main
Office PC.
With my old XP laptop the process each night would take about 3 minutes.

Now my new Pentium Duo Vista ThinkPad with 2GB of RAM takes about 10-15
minutes to do the same thing with a lot of waiting for the folders to do
their initial comparisons -it's a pain.
I'd like to use Offline folders but it has problems with Office 2000 (the
subject of a separate thread). I'm restricted to Office 2000 because of my
extensive use of Net Folders.

So, why is Briefcase so much slower on my Vista machine than it was under XP?

Under Vista I've now tried: Briefcase, Offline Files, FolderShare, and SyncToy.

All except SyncToy gave trouble ; Briefcase was much slower under Vista
than it ever had been on older XP machines, Offline Files didn't seem to be
compatible with my Word 2000 and Excel 2000, and FolderShare seemed
unreliable, unstable and just plain flaky at times.

By contrast SyncToy seems to be fast and stable, and unlike Briefcase it can
be set tu run as a Scheduled Task. I recommend it.
