I have been unable to find documentation to explain how BRIEFCASE's "Merge" function works when both local file and the server file have been modified?

While Briefcase obviously still exists, its purpose and function have been
supplanted by the synchronized folders or Offline Files and Folders. My
Briefcase is a Windows 95 utility; see its definition at the bottom of
<http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=/support/glossary/M.as
p>. I think you will continue to see issues using My Briefcase. So, note for
instance "Files Are Not Copied into Windows 2000 Briefcase",
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;262080&Product=win2000. I
believe that newer versions of Office also provide some intelligence for
versioning and merging changes that are worth a look, at the very least.
Also look at Windows SharePoint Services and its Document Workspaces.
