Running XP Pro on a 733 MHz processor, just started
getting a problem where the system seems to pause for a
brief instant every second or so. this wreaks havoc with
any audio and is otherwise noticeable when dragging the
mouse or any other visual object around the screen. i
don't see anything obvious in the task manager that is
sucking up resources.

anyone have experience with this?

I have the exact same problem, it's happening right at this moment as a matter of fact.

The system pauses every second as if I was running a virus scan or installing something in the background. Nothing appears in the task manager with the exception of the 10-15% increase in CPU usage. The only thing that seems to fix it is reformatting but it seems that is only a temporary solution.

I use Windows XP Pro on an AMD Athlon 64 3000+

The only other reference to this problem I've seen was this:

"I noticed that Norton File Saver 5.0.3 runs much slower when restarting and shutdowns. It seems to pause for a half a second every second when running."
