PC "pauses" every few seconds

For the last few days I experience an annoying problem with xp. Every few
seconds
it seems like my computer freezes and then after half a second cotinues
normaly. It affects my mouse, audio/video, adn typing, and makesprograms
take forever to start.

Does anyone have an ideea what the problem could be?


Also, is there a way to reinstall windows system files, but keep the
computer intact? BAsically, I guess it's time to reinstall windows, but I
don't want to lose my My Documents, or any programs (I know in the past I
have done this and kept the programs intact, but they wont install because it
can't find a few files.) Do you know what I mean? I just want to reinstall
xp, without losing everything.

First, follow the yellow section on this page:

Then check for and replace corrupted system files:
Start/Run
Type "sfc /scannow" ENTER
Follow prompts.
You may need the Windows XP CD so have it available.

If all else fails and you want to perform a Repair Installation:
