Break through in XPE USB INSTALL on any USB device

Hi all,
now I am able to install a generic XPE (that means run FBA)on ANY USB
device and boot after that from there. I changed "Boot Bus Extender"
against "System Reserved" for all USB Group
entries. But the best thing is: Now it doesnt matter, which USB device is
connected. I found a GENERIC entry (3 extra entries are needed in
CriticalDeviceDatabase for USBSTOR), and now the Vid and Pid numbers
doesnt interest me any more, it simply works on any USB device. Like I
said to you, Tutorial Version 3 will work...hihi

Nice to hear from you
Dietmar

PS: I do a try with Windows Vista.

Hi all,

I solved ALL for USB BOOT.

Last:
You have to change ntoskrnl.exe in your XPE image against a special
ntoskrnl.exe that I can sent you via Email:

It is the ntoskrnl.exe from XP SP1, but not that from CD, but that from
your updated XPSP1 via Microsoft with Version 5.1.2600.1634
(xpsp2.050301-1526)

it is NOT XP SP2 ntoskrnl.exe .

If you receive a 021 error message before FBA, disable all Harddisks and
CDROMS
in your Bios. After FBA you can enable them again and Voila  ,

I HAVE NOW ONE XPE IMAGE, THAT RUNS ON ALL OF MY COMPUTERS WITH ANY
USBDEVICE WITH NO HARDDISK CONNECTED!

Nice to hear from you
Dietmar

PS: After FBA YOU have to set back the Services entries to start=0 and
Group System Reserved for the USB drivers.
That happens sometimes later also....grrr (until now...hihi)

How big does the USB drive need to be? Can you run from a 512Mb USB key?

Thanks,

Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,

a full XP SP1 can be put on a USB Stick with 512 MB on NTFS compressed.
If you use XPE, an image which looks very XPPro like can be build lets say
about 300 MB.
A XPE only with Internetexplorer is smaller than 100 MB. My smallest one,
that I ever build until
now, meets 13 MB. (A minlogon, but not the Macrocomponent, but build by
hand.)

Nice to hear from you all
Dietmar

PS: Hi Slobodan, how big was your smallest one
which gives you commandline?

Hi Jeremy,
in most cases I disabled the swapfile.
But it can stay on the USB device.

Nice to hear from You
Dietmar
