border around captions missing

I cannot get borders around my captions in 2003. How can I turn that feature
on?

Which version of Word did you use before, when you got borders around the
captions? I can't remember any version that created a border by default...

In any case, you need to add this to the CAPTION style's definition:

1. Format/Styles and Formatting (the task pane with this name will appear)

2. At the very bottom, display the dropdown list and choose "Custom"

3. click "Styles"

4. Find "Caption" in the list, then click "Modify"

5. click Format, then choose Border

6. Click on the "Box" entry, then OK.

7. If you want this in ALL documents, activate the checkbox "Add to template"

8. Click OK, then Close

When you exit Word, if you're prompted to save changes to the Normal.dot
template, answer YES so that the change to the Caption style will be saved.
