Border around a table

B

BK

Using Word 2000. I have a table with 4 rows and 4 columns that is a
fill-in-the-blank use. Columns 1 and 3 have my text in them with no
borders. Columns 2 and 4 are blank cells with only the bottom border of
each cell visible. The user will type in there.

Now I want to border the entire table to set it off from the rest of the
document. When I choose Format--Shading and Borders and set it to "table,"
I lose my interior lines. When I choose "paragraph," I get the border
around each cell in the table.

I can't seem to border the entire table with double lines and still maintain
the single border at the bottom of each cell in columns 2 and 4 for my user
to type on.

Help!!

Try a different tack:

1. Display the Tables and Borders toolbar.

2. Select the line type and weight you want to use. This may activate the
pencil mouse pointer; if so, click the Draw Table button to turn it off.

3. Select the entire table (in Word 2000 or above, you can do this by
clicking on the table handle).

4. Click the arrow beside the border button to display the border palette
and select Outer Border.

You certainly have helped. With a little bit of fidgeting around, I am able
to keep the single line at the bottom of the cells in Columns 2 and 4 and
have a double line border around the outside of the table.

Thanks so much. Wonder why this wouldn't work through the Format - Border
and Shading drop down menu?

It's annoying that it doesn't; in fact, I can't find any satisfactory way to
do this through the Borders and Shading dialog directly. You can use the
Borders button on the Formatting toolbar once you've selected your line type
and weight, though. Select the top row and apply a top border, bottom row
and apply a bottom border, left column left border, right column right
border. But that's pretty inefficient compared to using the Tables and
Borders toolbar (especially if you happen to have it displayed already.
