My laptop has been working fine.
I did not install any new software.
This afternoon I shut down.
I have been trying to boot up.
and it is going very slow. It takes a half hour to get to the login screen.
and now it has been loading for over an hour since putting in the password.

the background picture comes up. but the "loading your preferences" dialog
is just hanging there.

I can boot into safe mode.
is there something I can do there? to fix this?

Thier is a utility from microsoft called "BootVis" it speeds up boot time by
opening the utility, trace, optimize system. However microsoft did away with it
2 yrs ago,it can still be found from 3rd party, try google or msn.com/search

what is a system restore?
did i have to back up the system at some point?

Check if it's enabled here:

Right-click 'My Computer' -> 'Properties' -> 'System Restore' tab

To restore to an earlier point:

Start -> "Help & Support" -> 'Pick a Task' -> 'Undo changes to your computer with System Restore'
