this problem sounds similar to slaforce's but i don't
recall an error message. it did occur after i went to
windows update and downloaded the recommended updates.
one was direct x, one was a security thing.

when i rebooted, the logon screen
came up, i could (and can) log in, but then the computer
showed the windows background with no icons and no access
to menu bars. i can get into the task manager but really
wouldn't know what program to run to fix it...

i tried norton systmworks windoctor but it found no
problems. i'd like to run windows update but i don't know
what its .exe file is named. any help or links to help
would be greatly appreciated. doug

thanks for the advice. i can boot up in safe mode fine
but i don't get a desktop there either. i think the
problem is similar to 256194....

i had exactly the same problem, check this link it will help.

in my case the problem was CD RW although it was working fine, so i just disabled it in safe mode and rebooted and every thing worked fine.
When u are in the safe mode check your error logs at control panedl > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. look at the errors u get in system every time u try to boot up.... and u will find the device...

good luck
