Bootleg Windows XP Problem

I ended up with a bootleg copy of Windows XP Pro and went back to the vender
and got my money back. The problem is this. I have this loaded on my computer
and of course it will not verify as genuine. I have all my software loaded
and do not want to have to redo all of that. I have 5 copies of legitimate
Windows XP Pro as well as an upgrade version. Is there a way out of this
situation?

You boot from one of the legitimate CD's (it was never used to install
Windows on a computer) and do a repair install.

Boot your computer with the CD for one of the legitimate XP Pro
versions and do a Repair Install as per the instructions at

Good luck

Better, just update the serial number to the official one. Software to
do it easily Googled.

I have a similar problem as Skip. A couple months ago, I had an upgrade done
to my computer, and although I have WinXP Home, the vendor installed XP Pro
instead. Now I cannot get updates, and am wondering if it is possible to
install XP Home over the Pro version without any dire effects. Do I
un-install the Pro version and then install Home back on my system, or is it
possible to just install Home over the Pro?
Thank you for your time,

Answered in your other post. Best not to post onto another thread.

I realized that after I posted in here. Not nice ettiquet (sp) on my part,
that's why I started a new thread. Sorry for the double post.

You can't install Home over Pro. The only way to get Home back on
there is to do a clean install of Home - which will wipe out
everything on the drive.

If you are lucky, whoever upgraded you may have left the option there
to move back to Home, but don't ask me about that - ask them.

This worked Jerry. Thanks for you help.
