Can't seem to find out "how" to boot in safe mode
operating Windows XP Home Ed. Can someone walk me through
this? I have search microsoft & these newsgroups without
success. Tks.

Hi

Reboot your PC and keep tapping F8. After a while you should see a
'DOS-like' screen with various options on. One of those will be Safe Mode.

The F8 key IS your friend!
You MUST hit the F8 key BEFORE the Windows XP splash
screen. That means you should be tapping the F8 key every
half second from the moment you turn on your PC, most
people aren't fast enough to hit it at the exact moment
you need to, so just tap the F8 key when you see the black
screen loading your drives and checking your memory. Then
arrow up to SAFE MODE and hit enter

When powering on the computer, watch what happens. First
you should see some messages on a black screen maybe a
logo from the manufacturer (Sony, Dell, etc.). Then, the
Windows screen comes up and the operating system begins to
load. When the manufacturer logo disappears from the
screen you should tap-tap-tap the F8 key about once per
second, BEFORE the Windows screen comes on and take the
SAFE mode option from the menu.

Alternately you can (from Windows) go to Start, Run and
type MSCONFIG and hit OK. Go to the Boot.ini tab and put
a check mark next to /SAFEBOOT then hit Apply, OK and
reboot as directed. When you get to SAFE mode, run
MSCONFIG again (when you're finished doing what you're
doing) and turn the /SAFEBOOT switch off (uncheck it), hit
Apply, OK, then reboot.

Good Luck !

First, when you initially power on, as the BIOS info or makers logo goes
to black, before the Windows logo, tap on the F8 key. That should then
come up to a menu that includes Safe Mode.

But the time 'window' can be tricky to hit. Alternative, in Windows
Start - Run and run MSConfig.exe

On the BOOT.INI page check /SAFEBOOT and exit, to reboot - into Safe
Mode. You will need to run the program again there and uncheck the box
set so that the next boot is back to normal. Exit - do not bother to
reboot until you want to, but when you do there will be a message about
'System Configuration'. Check the 'Do not show again' box and exit
