Booted up this morning and themes are broken!

Typical MS windows...
I booted up this morning and all the themes no longer work for all the
users on this computer - I start with "classic look". Great. They are stil
listed in Display_properties -> Themes but if I select them only the
background changes and everything else default back to Classic. The demo
window is blacked out mostly. I then need to go Appearence and re-select
Windown XP style, but then I get stuck with the three naff colour schemes
in XP. My saved theme (saved especially for this kind of crap) doesnt work
either.
About 18 months ago I saved that hacked uxtheme.dll or whatever it is
called, but I cant remember all the crap I went though to get themes
working to start with! I am very close to wiping this rubbish off and
giving the partition to my linux install. Can anyone tell me how to undo
whatever wierdness has happened? Cheers,

Its coming back to me now - I used to have "Coughdrop", and I can still
see the CoughDrop.msstyles file. If I double click on it it just opens up
the display properties tab on Appearence. There is no sign of Coughdrop
there any more though...

Hi,
This is not a "Typical MS Windows" problem. The hacked uxtheme.dll is not a
part of Windows XP and hence you should not complain if you are getting
probelms after installing the hacked file. Go to wherever you got the file
from and ask those guys. Change your attitude if you want any help in these
newsgroups. Do not blame Windows or MS for any problem that you have
created.

I will give you a hint: The hacked uxtheme.dll has been replaced by Windows
File Protection by the original dll file and hence the third party themes do
not work any more.

This is not a "*problem*" and in advance, I'm not *blaming MS for this
phenomenon* since it involves a 3rd party software that makes the gui more
interesting. I take the responsibility when I bring in 3rd party Software
that I can't expect MS or MS Research or MS XP/Longhorn Developers to
anticipate much of the software and hardware out there. I use themes from
TGT-Soft's "Style XP." Ocasionally, with no pattern, when I boot the style
will revert to a crude toolbar and namebar--more linear but keep the Style
primary color I selected with a slightly different shade. When this
happens, I only have to reboot to get back the Style theme.

I just want to learn what's going on when this happens and if anyone can
clarify Anando's hint invoking WFP when I presume SFC wasn't run when Mark
booted up and saw his themes gone. Does WFP somehow replace that .dll
automatically and how?

Hi,
According to what Mark described, it was clear that he was trying to use
third party visual styles without the hacked uxtheme.dll He also mentions
that peviously they were working properly and this problem started only
recently. One can clearly deduce that the hacked uxtheme.dll has been
replaced by the original one. he explicitly mentions that he installed the
uxtheme.dll 18 months ago so the posibility that he is/was using StyleXP is
ruled out. The question is that what replaced the hacked dll. If he did not
do it himself, then the best guess is WFP.

The guy does not know what he is saying/doing and assumes that it is Windows
XP's fault for not running Third-party visual styles.

The file is the one advised from "Kelly's corner".

The file has not been replaced - it has not been touched.
I might have known not to get any help here. As usual, "It's not
Microsoft's fault" that it's OS did something wierd and unprovoked.

If you have any knowledge about the working of Windows XP, then you might be
knowing about the WFP. If you dont know about WFP, please visit the

I hope it will become clear to you as to how the hacked uxtheme.dll got
replaced on its own after you read the above mentioned article.
