boot up problem

Hope this is the correct newsgroup. If not, please let me
know where to post.

User's laptop won't boot up. On the menu choice screen,
when choosing Normal, nothing happens.

When choosing Safe Mode, it hangs when either trying to
load or just finishing loading the
System32\Drivers\atisgkaf.sys file.

The laptop doesn't have an operating system cd, just a
recovery cd. I'm trying to avoid having to wipe it out and
reinstall. Does anybody know anything about that file? or
anyway to get past it?

Thank you!

One would guess that file is related to the ATI video drivers. Can you
get into Safe Mode without VGA? If the client recently updated the
video drivers (perhaps unfortunately from Windows Update), try rolling
them back. If not, then try uninstalling and reinstalling the video
drivers. Get proper ones from the laptop mftr.'s website. If you cannot
get into Safe Mode without VGA, what about booting Last Known Good
Configuration? You may need to do a Repair Install. Check with the
laptop mftr. for how to do this with their recovery software.
