Boot up problem, Please Help

started a week ago, when i turn on my computer it hangs on the asus screen
for a minute then says "boot failure, insert disk". When I then turn my
computer off & then back on, it boots up everytime without a problem. this
happens everytime the computer has been off for a few hrs. any suggestions?

Things it's not, the ide delay, or the battery (computer clock keeps right
date & time), don't think it's the hard drive because it's under a yr old &
runs good. also eveytime i restart my computer it boots up fine every time,
its just when i shut it off for awhile will that problem come up, system
restore doesn't help, thinking of doing a "Fix it" install of xp.
.. I disabled the floppy 2 weeks ago thinking it was the problem & after
that it booted up fine for 2 days but then the problem came back. Oh & when
i first went in to the bios before i disabled the floppy, it had on its own
made the floppy 1st to boot from. it's was the hard drive to boot first
before that. how could it have changed by itself lol. Please someone help:)

Jason:
What you're experiencing is a rather common occurrence when the HD is having
severe problems and may be about to fail. The first thing you should do
without delay is to backup whatever important/critical files are on that
drive. Then download the HD manufacturer's diagnostic utility to check out
the drive.

Now having said all that it's surely possible your problem is *not* a
defective HD but something entirely different. But do as I suggest and we
can go on from there.

how do i find who's the hd manufacturer is?

Jason:
Why did I have the feeling you were going to ask me that?

Go to Device Manager (Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device
Manager)
Open "Disk drives" and see if you can determine the HD manuf., e.g., WDC
would be Western Digital. You may see Maxtor, Seagate, Samsung, Hitachi,
etc., etc.

lol, ok. found it. it will take me awhile to run the test, i so hope it
isn't the drive

Most likely the 12 volt side of the power supply, not enough oomph to drive
the HD motor at startup to full speed immediately.
Or, as Anna stated, could be the hard drive itself.
The former is more likely if someone built your PC.

Hello Lil'Dave
Interesting opinion - someone has to build the computer - do you mean other
than off-the-shelf builder, like mine. Also recently had startup probs and
not booting. It was also suggested that the HD was on the way out.
As suggested by Anna in this post, I did search for manufacturer but no
name - is the answer in HDS722516VLSA80 perhaps, then I can do a
diagnostics. I did suggest to my builder that the HD was no good - he
poopoo'd the idea.

No, I was incorrect. I stand corrected.

A poorly planned build may contain a power supply inadequate for the system.
+12V and +5V are the primary amperage requirements, and need the most
research for amperage requirements on the entire PC vs what the power supply
provides on these two legs. Or, they do not consider adding internal
hardware by the user. And/or, they do not consider power supply
degradation, and/or hardware component-level degradation requiring more
power, thus amperage.

A factory made, shop built or homebuilt PC can do the same thing simply if
its power supply is beginning to fail. If the power supply is simply
degrading slightly, it may be a marginal power supply considering the PCs
hardware. See above last sentence.

I noticed the Asus motherboard mentioned, and suspected a home build.

Massive wattage power supplies, some in the 500 or more total wattage range
may only deliver amperage on the 12V or 5V leg equivalent to some 350W power
supplies. So, research is needed in the power supply specifics as well when
doing a homebuild. Some rookie homebuilders just throw in the largest
wattage power supply without researching its +5V and +12V amperage delivery
on their super tower PCs. Then wonder why adding more than a few internal
and bay components, the PC isn't working.

Factory PCs, lately, have little or no room for additional internal hardware
like another hard drive, or available external bays. So, consideration for
user internal additions is not part of their equation when considering the
power supply requirements. Just minimal degradation.

Antioch:
Your HD is a Hitachi SATA drive. Go to Hitachi's site, download their
diagnostic utility and test your drive.
