Boot-time defrag

D

Daz

When trying to run a boot-time defrag, using Diskeeper 9, it fails and
displays

"Couldn't open NTFS volume; Most likely cause: couldn't get exclusive access

Diskeeper boot-time defrag cannot occur safely when another process is
accessing the volume, so boot-time job requested will not run.
Try again later.

.........
.........
.........

Failed to initialize for volume C: -- volume probably not mounted or is not
NTFS
Exiting"

Can anyone help me resolve this?

Restart your computer and it should work.

PS. I am running Windows XP Home and my drive file system is NTFS.

Sorry but I didn't say that the message that I get happens when I restart,
at which time the boot-time defrag should run.

WHY? That may be the problem. Turn off that option and run it when you
want, AFTER the system has had a complete chance to settle down (and
nothing is accessing the disk, like a few of minutes after bootup).

Thanks for your reply.

The Boot-time defrag is designed to run at bootup to defrag things that
can't be defragged while online. Such things as the MFT and the Paging file
are not defragged while the system is in its normal state. They can only be
done when the drive is inactive i.e. at bootup before windows etc is
running.

But I have now tried it after a full Shutdown rather than a Restart with the
same result.

Many thanks for your reply.
I do have ZA installed and have updated it to the latest build but the
problem remains. I did think of uninstalling it to see if the Boot-time
defrag will then work. Do you think that is a good idea?

Why do you want to defrag the pagefile? That's a complete waste of time!
Defragging the MFT on boot up is also not gaining your much.

Does the Disk Defragmenter provided with Windows XP work?

Hope this helps.

I find it annoying that pagefile.sys gets defragmented when Windows resizes
the thing !
....I dumped Diskeeper in favour of PerfectDisk, ...much better :)
....just re-implemented, ( found on aumha.org ? years ago ), set small fixed
min. and max. 60mb swapfile on boot-drive & main windows mananged swapfile
on 1st drive of 2nd hd, ...much better ! :)

I had problems with Diskeeper, and pagefil, hiberfil and meta files getting
locked by Windows before Diskeeper could grab them during boot up / before
Windows loading up.
I gave up fighting with it - PerfectDisk doesn't have the same inadequacies
:)

Thank you all for your very prompt replies. I will look deeper into weather
I need to defrag such things as the pagefile and MFT. If I do go ahead I may
then look at using PerfectDisk.

Thanks again, Daz

If you aren't connected to the internet during that time. Just pull the
cable for the duration.

Use PageDefrag instead:

Or any app that is accessing the disk during that time, including some
windows core ones during boot up.

....just a thought...
I think that the PC on which I encountered problems with Diskeeper in the
past, was possibly to do with having some sort of "Fast Boot" facility
switched on in bios - Foxconn 760GXK8MC-S-RS I think, (that was seemed to be
possibly saving stuff from a Windows session - something like Windows
"hibernation" - I never looked into it in detail), ...I can remember
problems similar to yours, in that setting a boot-up level defrag. - so that
it could "get in there" before Windows locked files in place - failed !
....I probably fought with it for a while, and then gave up and installed
Perfect Disk.

....another thought - occasionally I work through Windows Services and try to
track down services that can be switched off, have you switched off any
Windows Services lately ? ...
http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm ...happy hours working
through these !

For anyone interested, I have found the answer to this one.
The problem was a corruption of the Registry value
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\BootExecute. By
deleting the value for this key and running "chkntfs /d" at the Command
Prompt it is now reset to its default value and my Diskeeper will now
perform a Boot-time defrag.

Thanks again to all that posted replies, Daz
