Previous probs being stuck in a loop promtped advice to have HDD checked
with makers diagnostic tool.
Did this last night(wished I hadnt).
It all started OK, got to part of the run and up came error code 0x70 sector
read error.
I have told Hitachi about this as they said inform them as soon as any error
code shows.
The next prob was getting out of this DFT diagnostic. It was impossible
using the onscreen suggestion of alt-x.
Every time I tried it just restarted the diagnostic sequence.
In the end I had to remove the diag. disk and reboot.
That was when I found I was back in the old loop, but this time no Windows
start showed.
Tried my Windows disk - it ran then told me that it could not find any HDD
drivers installed.
I have a feeling now that the whole computer needs
a complete rebuild.
I am open to suggestions/advice

The fact that the drive diagnostic failed means the hard drive has
failed. There is no way to determine that the "whole computer needs a
complete rebuild" from the information you provided. We have no way of
knowing if your motherboard is good or not. What we *do* know is that
the hard drive has failed and needs to be replaced.

Hi Malke
You make it sound as if the chance of using anything from the suggested web
sites from Eric, would do any good.
I have told Hitachi what happened and they have responded with further
actionable advice which I know is beyond my capabilities.
May I ask though, in the Bios - boot devices - should the HHD show. I have
1. Floppy, 2. CD R Aopen 2. Something to do with Realtek(this keeps showing
up in the loop I am getting). There seem to be no other choices.
Got to get the doctor out.
Many thanks for your help again

I don't know what you mean about the "suggested web sites from Eric". I
didn't comment on them. If your hard drive doesn't show in the BIOS,
the hard drive is dead and/or the connector to it on the motherboard is
dead. In either case this is a hardware problem and no software
solution will be useful.

Hi Malke
Thank you for your help yet again.
I did understand your first reply but I certainly did not suggest that you
made any comment whatsoever about the advice given by Eric. I referred to
your first reply as 'you make it sound as if etc etc.....'
Did you read Eric's reply and his suggestion?
Thanks to both of you

Eric's post had links showing how to recover XP. You cannot recover XP
(software) on dead hardware. You have to fix the hardware first.

Hi Malke
Yes I understood that from what you said and the matter is to be resolved
soon.
Thanks
