Boot problem

I

Intel Inside

When I installed Vista I disconnected the drive with Windows XP drive
installed 'just in case' of problems.
Because the Vista installation went ok, I reconnected the XP drive and ran
VistaBootPro (in Vista) to configure a dual boot.

The resulting boot menu appears ok, however when I select option 2 (XP) the
pc reboots back into the boot menu only.

Running Bcdedit under Vista reveals :

Windows Legacy OS Loader
------------------------
identifier {*I removed this identifier*}
device partition=D:
path \ntldr
description Windows XP Pro

Any ideas on why the boot does not proceed to actually booting into XP?.

It's strange that there would be an identifier listed for XP, as it should
be {ntldr}

If you copy your ntldr ntdetect.com and boot.ini files to the same partition
with the Vista bootloader, then you may have to adjust the boot.ini file to
reflect the current RISC setup.

I used BCDEasy to create a second boot and I renamed the computers

Windows Vista Beta 2
Windows 2000 Professional

Then I copied the ntldr ntdetect.com and boot.ini files from the root of the
Windows 2000 drive to the root of the Windows Visat drive.

Then I changed boot.ini from

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect

to

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect

When I set the boot order in the BIOS from HDD-0 to HDD-1, it boots up to
the Vista drive and I get a menu with the choices

Windows Vista Beta 2
Windows 2000 Professional

If I choose Windows Vista Beta 2, it boots up to Vista.

If I choose Windows 2000 Professional, it goes to another menu with the
choices

Windows 2000 Professional
Windows (Default)

If I choose Windows 2000 Professional, I get a Hal.dll error message

If I choose Windows (Default) I boot up into Windows 2000.

At this point I don't want to go back in and straighten this last nit out,
but I think it's interesting that you can get it to work.
