boot problem

The pc was working fine one night, the next day wouldn't boot up.

On the power up screen, it checks the processor, checks the memory and
then hangs at checking drives. I just have a floppy and a single hard
drive.

Accessing Bios, in standard CMOS setup, hard disc is set to Auto detect.
All screens and settings look ok until I get to IDE HDD auto detection.
There are no entries under option, size, cyls, etc.. I can not type "Y'
or "N' etc. Also, this screen can not be navagated. Esc will not take
me back to the main menu. I have to power off and back on and enter bios
again.

All other sections of bios work fine. Would a bad or weak power supply
cause this? Or has my hard drive bit the dust?

The connections all seem ok inside the case.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

I assume that you have checked the IDA hard disk cable both ends and that
the power supply to the hard disc is plugged in Ok.
Might be worth resetting the Bios - they sometimes get "their knickers in a
twist". Normally this is done by shorting out two pins - look in the MBd
handbook. You will then need to set time, date etc and select "load
defaults".
If this does not work - then it could well be a faulty hard disc.

The cables are good. I have even checked the voltage off of the power
supply. It all seems in order.

Can you hear/feel the HD spin up?
It may be worth trying it on the other IDE channel just in case you have a
dead channel on the mobo. Unlikely but it happens.
