Major Delays in POST -- HELP PLEASE

yossarian

I am experiencing enormous delays in getting my computer to POST.

Now, the initial POST screen lasts for several minutes. Eventually
after 5-6 minutes, the OS starts up. If I want to get into the BIO
that also takes a good 5-6 minutes before I can even edit any BIO
settings.

According to the diagnostic LEDs I am hanging at "Boo
Attempt" -- "This will set low stack and boot via IN
19h

This is what my screen reads when it hangs:

Checking NVRAM . . .
1048576KB OK

My hardware is as follows:

AMD Athlon XP 2400+ processor
MSI KT6 Delta motherboard
Western Digital 120GB IDE Hard Drive (boot drive)
Seagate 30 GB IDE Hard Drive
Maxtor 120GB SATA Hard Drive
Western Digital 320GB SATA Hard Drive
2 512MB PC 3200 RAM cards
NEC 1300A DVD Burner
NEC 5700A DVD Player

I have tried disconnecting the SATA drives, but that does not help.
tried booting with just one of the RAM cards (each one). That als
did not help.

I should also add that I have the most recent version of the BIO
(5.70).

I don't think it is an OS problem, but I did defrag all 4 hard drives
I have cleaned up the registry as well. In fact, once I get to th

I've tried that. I also reset the CMOS jumper, which defaults th
BIOS back to original settings.

The prior BIOS was the same version. I tried a flash from DOS on th
off chance that something was awry with the BIOS, but there did no
seem to be

The problem seemed to come out of nowhere, and did not follow a BIO
change

Did you try to boot with the minimum hardware installed? One stick of
RAM, one hard drive, one video card. Hell, you could even leave out
the hard drive.

Disconnect ALL drives, from the data cables at least, then
turn on the system and see if it still hesitates.

If it does not, add back some drives and check their jumpers
as you add them. Check your bios boot menu settings to
confirm it is set appropriately to the drive, not defaulting
to it after searching for network or other boot devices and
finally timing out from those failures.

If all else fails, clear the CMOS, and if that doesn't help,
try another bios version.

I tried startup with just the minimum -- 1 stick of RAM and m
monitor. It still hangs for several minutes

I again reset the CMOS jumper and even tried removing and replacin
the battery. Now, on top of everything else, I get a CMOS gpn
checksum error. But the board still hangs and I cannot get to a BIO
setup screen

The Int 19H is the interupt used in the bios to access the hard drives,
since you disconnected all the drives (and I am assuming you emoved the
cables from the MB) and still have the same problem the I suspect the IDE
control on the MB. No easy solutions to that problem other than to buy a new
one.
